Finding outlier videos can help you figure out topics that will perform well for your niche and also give you ideas for titles and thumbnails that work.
What is an Outlier video?
When you look at a channels average views over a period of time an Outlier video is a video that goes beyond those average views and is significant more views.
Why Find Outlier videos?
This will help you generate ideas or ways to position your video that you know have already worked for other creators. This gives you a starting point for a new video that could get a bigger reach.

During this period on my channel my views were averaging between 15k-35k, however, there is one video that has over 350k views. This is an outlier video.
Time is Important
One thing to consider when looking at the outlier video is when this video was created. Sometimes you’ll find Outlier videos that are a few months ago and some will be years ago. See if the timing of the video plays into the reason that this video took off the way it did
  • Sample: My beginners guide for the DJI Spark has 2.1M Views and performed way better than other videos at that time on my channel. However, this is an old product so its no longer relevant and if you made this video today it would not take off the same.
  • You can look at this video and see a factor that made this an outlier video “Beginners Guide”

Find the bigger Outlier Videos
Another way to look at this is calculate the average of the 4 videos before and after this video.
(17k+19k+30k+30k+34k+22k+13k+15k) / 8 = 22.5k Average
Now take this number and find the % increase that this outlier video is
351k/22.5k = 14.6 or 1460% increase in views
You can use this number to see how much of a view increase an outlier video is compared to other outlier videos to figure out which videos have the most impact for a specific channel
What to do when you find an Outlier video
Now that you found an outlier video you need to look at whats different about this video. It could be a few different factors:
  • Packaging - Topic, Title, Thumbnail
  • Format - How was the information or story delivered
  • Delivery - How did the creator approach the information.
  • Length - Was it a super short video, super long or similar to the other videos
Another aspect you want to look at is the comment section and see what the viewers are saying about this video. You want to make sure that this is a video that is driving genuine viewership and not something that has gone viral for other reasons.
WARNING: Make sure a vide is not artificially boosted. This can be done a number of ways but often a company will use the video as an advertisement to get more views. These are not organic views and also don’t reflect if a video is good or not.
  • Look for videos with high views and few comments
  • Look at the like count on the video
Look Outside your Niche
Don’t just look for outlier videos in your niche. Often times you’ll find a unique video concept in a completely different niche but when you adapt it to yours it becomes an outlier video on your own channel. Find whats working in general for creators and adapt it to your unique channel.
